Time.news – Twelve prisoners died during a brawl in largest prison in Ecuador, the Penitentiary of the Litoral. The prosecution has “launched a preliminary investigation to identify those responsible for the death of 12 people deprived of their liberty, within the Penitenciarìa del Litoral, in Guayaquil“.
The clash, which began in the early afternoon and lasted until late yesterday evening, when gunshots were heard from outside, involved the inmates of wings 3, 5, 8 and 9. Two days earlier, 6 inmates of the ward 5 of the same prison died by hanging. The director of the penitentiary, Ronald Sanchez, stated that no escapes were recorded during the bloody brawl. The shooting lasted about 4 1/2 hours and 9mm handguns and rifles were used.
Massacres and overcrowding
While the identification work continues inside the prison, the families of the prisoners are desperately waiting for information outside. In the midst of desperation, requests for news from relatives joined in an anguished chorus and the request to the prison director “to show up, to give us a list of the dead: they are not animals, they are human beings”.
The Penitenciarìa del Litoral has been the site of some of the largest massacres recorded in Ecuador’s prisons since 2020, in which more than 450 inmates have been killed as rival gangs vie for internal control of the prisons. Added to this are prison conditions, with overcrowding that in some cases can reach 50% of the prison’s capacity.
