In June 2023, Peru faced an increase in the number of cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare and fatal disease, which causes an attack by the immune system on the peripheral nervous system. Guillain-Barré syndrome can cause muscle weakness, pain, or, in severe cases, paralysis of the leg muscles, arm muscles, or respiratory muscles. Although it often occurs after an infection, its exact cause is not known.
