Guillaume Canet unveils the first teaser of his “Asterix”

by time news

Sand dunes, camels, fight scenes and Obélix who laughs out loud at the clumsiness of his friend Asterix… On his Instagram account, Guillaume Canet has just unveiled the first teaser for “Asterix and Obelix: The Empire du Milieu”, which will be released on February 1, 2023. In this one-minute video, we see the two new performers of the heroes (Gilles Lellouche as Obélix and Guillaume Canet as Asterix), but also Vincent Cassel in the role of César (who announces that he will “become the new emperor of China”), Marion Cotillard as Cleopatra, José Garcia and Jonathan Cohen.

This is only a small part of a maddening cast, which also includes Franck Gastambide, Ramzy Bedia, footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, YouTubers McFly and Carlito, rapper Orelsan, Jérôme Commandeur, Pierre Richard, Philippe Katerine, Angèle or again Matthieu Chedid, who also composes the soundtrack.

The eighth biggest budget in the history of French cinema

With “Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire”, Guillaume Canet and his producers (Pathé and Trésors Films, in particular) are playing big. For the first time, this new adaptation of Goscinny and Uderzo’s comic book tells an unpublished story, imagined by Philippe Mechelen and Julien Hervé, two of the authors of “Tuche”, and by Canet himself. Also for the first time, it is not Gérard Depardieu who will portray Obélix, but Gilles Lellouche. Canet will succeed Christian Clavier, Clovis Cornillac and Édouard Baer.

This new “Asterix” also has a budget of 65 million euros, the eighth largest budget in history for a French film… Behind, among others, the films of Luc Besson and the “Asterix at the Olympic Games” by Thomas Langmann and Frederic Forestier. “Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom” takes place in 50 BC.

The pitch? While the Empress of China is imprisoned following a coup d’etat, her only daughter comes to ask for help from Asterix and Obelix, whose reputation is known as far away as Shanghai… The feature film was to be shot in China, but due to the Covid epidemic, it was finally produced in the studios of Bry-sur-Marne (Auvergne) and in the Moroccan desert for seventeen weeks in the spring and summer of 2021.
