The playwright and cultural manager Guillermo Heras, a key figure in independent theater from the Tábano group, has died at the age of 71 in Buenos Aires, as announced yesterday by the Institute of Performing Arts and Music (Inaem). In 1994 he won the National Theater Award for a career that has promoted contemporary creation that he has developed in various fields. As an author he published four dramatic books as well as several theoretical studies, and directed more than twenty productions. But he left even more mark in the role of his cultural manager. He was director of the National Center for New Stage Trends and promoted the Alicante Contemporary Authors Show, a reference for new playwrights that he directed for 29 years.

Those responsible for Inaem also highlighted its work «as a bridge between the Spanish and Latin American scene, due to its involvement in the Iberescena program and its conception of theater as a global space, free of borders. The sector loses a unique benchmark, “they lamented. He was especially attached to Argentina and had traveled there to teach some classes when he had to undergo surgery.

Born in Madrid in 1952, he studied acting at the Royal School of Dramatic Art and Dance and Journalism and Image at the Complutense. Between 1974 and 1983 he was part of the Grupo Tábano, created by Juan Margallo, and came to direct it. With him they represented mythical works in the death throes of the dictatorship and the beginnings of the Transition. From that militant and annoying theater for what was left of the regime, he went on to direct the National Center for New Stage Trends, under the Ministry of Culture. A hotbed of creativity from which he also gave a strong boost to contemporary dance. He held other positions, but always maintained that vision of the beginning. Lately, he was missing on stage “a creative spirit that is out of the ordinary, a theater of thought.”
