The government’s decision to lower the price of wheat flour and, consequently, reduce the price of bread came into force on Sunday, September 24, but traditional bakers decided to boycott production to protest this government measure.

In protest against the government’s decision to lower the price of bread to 150 CFA francs, traditional bakers did not announce the beginning and end of the demand, but left the capital of Bissau since yesterday, without one of the main food products.

The Minister of Commerce called for an emergency call on wheat flour importers, traditional bakers, industrialists and the Consumers Association. João Handem Júnior ordered the closure of violating bakeries; “The order is to immediately close the establishments and confiscate all products. In my neighborhood, if I don’t sell bread myself, I will close the establishments.”

While the solution to this struggle is being sought, the lack of bread in the capital Bissau, mainly fed by traditional production, is being filled by industrial bakers.
