Guinea-Bissau reiterates its constant support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Morocco over its Sahara

Laayoune – The Bissau-Guinean Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities, Carlos Pinto Pereira, reiterated, Tuesday in Laayoune, his country’s constant position in favor of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.

Speaking at a press briefing held following talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, Mr. Pereira reaffirmed Guinea Bissau’s support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, which he considers the only credible and realistic solution to this regional dispute.

He further welcomed the efforts of the United Nations as an exclusive framework to achieve a realistic, practical and lasting solution to the dispute over the Sahara.

Recalling the opening by the Republic of Guinea-Bissau of a Consulate General in Dakhla in October 2020, Mr. Pereira also reaffirmed that his country’s support is in line with the dynamics of international recognition of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, providing tangible proof of the solidity of the strategic partnership linking the two brotherly countries at the highest level.

He also highlighted the role of the southern provinces of Morocco as an important African “hub” and called for the experience of these provinces to be used as a basis for the establishment of a development policy for the whole of Africa.

The two ministers took this opportunity to renew their unwavering commitment to the principles of law and international legality, as well as to respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States.
