The Guinean international, Mohamed Bayo, snicknamed Momo by his teammates, gave his impressions of Guinea’s journey to CAN-2023 in Ivory Coast. He spoke about his situation at the club.
Last February, Guinea was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the CAN, African Cup of Nations, by DR Congo. A stage that it had not reached since 2015. After beating Equatorial Guinea, the national Syli “achieved something great”, according to Mohamed Bayo who believes that he “could have done better”. He still can’t digest Guinea’s exit at this stage of the competition: “The elimination against Congo hurt a lot, but that’s also football. »
Author of the goal which qualified Guinea at the last minute for the quarter-finals of CAN-2023, Momo keeps the memories of “one of the greatest joys” of his career. For him, CAN is his greatest experience as a footballer. Joining the Guinean national team is the best thing that happened to him. He remembers his very first appearance with Guinea: in March 2021, in the CAN-2021 qualifying match, against Mali, at the General Lansana Conté stadium in Nongo: “It’s a unique feeling to wear the Syli jersey National for the first time.
In direct competition with Stuttgart’s serial scorer, Serhou Guirassy, the Le Havre FC player is campaigning for cohabitation: “I think it can do it. We can contribute to each other… I remain in my status as a player and it is up to the coach to make his choice.” A situation that could resolve itself in the months to come. Next June, Syli will face the Fennecs of Algeria in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Complicated situation in the club
If he is adored at the national Syli, the situation is not as rosy at the club for Mohamed Bayo. Transferred to Lille in 2022, then loaned to Havre FC for the current season. Only four goals scored since the start of the season, Bayo is having a complicated season in the French championship. He remains focused on his objectives: “My goal is to stay in Le Havre, to concentrate on the end of the season. Afterwards, we will see with Lille. »
Under contract at LOSC until June 2027, Bayo is not closing the door to a departure during the transfer window. Germany and England make him dream. “One day, we will have to look elsewhere. The Bundesliga or the Premier League, why not? When the time comes, it will be decided. » In the meantime, he hopes to finish the season in style, scoring more goals for Le Havre FC.
