Guinea: Junta leader has only 167 days left to hand over to civilian power (Sacred Union of Lively Forces of Guinea) 2024-07-15 09:12:25

On Sunday July 14, 2024, in a statement, the sacred union of the living forces of Guinea called on Guineans to mobilize for a return to normal democratic and constitutional order.
Recalling in the statement that the head of the junta has only 167 days left to hand over to a civilian government.

Statement…

The Sacred Union of Living Forces of Guinea is following very closely the repeated announcements of the Prime Minister of the Transition and his Minister of Transport, government spokesperson on the organization of the constitutional referendum and the indefinite postponement of the transition timetable.

It is our duty to recall that the Prime Minister and his spokesperson have neither the legitimacy nor the legality to postpone a transition timetable initially established between a sub-regional institution and the Guinean State.

This is why we, members of the Sacred Union of Living Forces of Guinea, remain firm and categorical in respecting this provision established between ECOWAS and the Guinean State setting the duration of the transition at two (2) years.

We are aware of and deplore the socio-economic situation that our country is going through: the power cuts, the lack of water in the taps, the increase in the prices of basic necessities, unemployment, the resumption of kidnappings of socio-political leaders such as Foniké Menguè and Billo Bah, the attempted kidnapping of Mr. Alpha Bayo, coordinator of the MAOG, president of the communication commission of the Sacred Union. Not to mention the open-air gentrification of members of the CNRD and the government to the detriment of the well-being of the populations.

On the respect of the transition timetable, L’Union Sacrée maintains that the constituent referendum and the other electoral consultations planned within the framework of the return to normal constitutional order, can well be organized at the latest, on December 31, 2024.

These electoral consultations can be organized within the framework of a reorganization of the transition timetable by integrating the following modifications:

– The sidelining of the National Program for Administrative Census for Civil Status Purposes (PN/RAVEC),
– The consensual establishment of an Election Management Body (EMB),
– The cleaning of the electoral register,
– The joint organization of legislative and presidential elections.
This is why the Sacred Union of Living Forces of Guinea insistently calls on the authorities of the Transition, in particular the President of the Transition, General Mamadi DOUMBOUYA, to demonstrate patriotism in the face of his responsibility to organize, in accordance with his initial commitment, the electoral consultations planned by December 31, 2024 at the latest.

During the 65th session of ECOWAS, she welcomed the progress made in Guinea in the context of the transition, we believe that this sub-regional body is totally disconnected from the realities of the country. It must take its responsibilities to demand compliance with the agreement that was signed between it and the authorities of the Transition.

At the same time, the government spokesperson Minister officially declared that the duration of the transition was postponed indefinitely without any consultation with the political class. We condemn this statement with the utmost energy and we invite the CNRD to dissociate itself at the risk of being held accountable for the consequences that could result from it.

The dynamics of Guinean civil society organizations have announced Red T-shirt Days (Every Thursday) and a series of demonstrations on July 30/31 and August 1, 2024 against the closure of the media and the high cost of living. We, members of the Sacred Union of Living Forces of Guinea, give our unconditional support to this approach and invite the People to mobilize for the success of these actions, because the fight against the closure of the media is an issue inseparable from the return to constitutional order.

After this stage and in accordance with our action plan, the Sacred Union of Living Forces is also planning a series of demonstrations both in Guinea and abroad with a view to forcing the CNRD to bend in its desire to seize power.

From this press conference, we officially launch the countdown for the return to constitutional order. We remind national and international public opinion that we have only 167 days left for the transitional authorities to hand over to a democratically elected civilian power.

The Sacred Union calls on the sovereign people of Guinea to unite and mobilize for a return to normal democratic and constitutional order by the end of 2024.

In any event, the Sacred Union of the Living Forces of Guinea reserves the right not to recognize the institutions resulting from the coup d’état of September 5, to call for civil disobedience throughout the territory, to call for the establishment of a civilian government whose sole mission will be to initiate the electoral process within a reasonable time frame with a view to a return to constitutional order.

Long live the return to constitutional order!

Long live democracy!

Long live the Republic!
