I hope this message resonates with you. I would like to express to you my deep concern about the disastrous situation prevailing in Guinea, and more particularly about the multitude of human rights violations committed by the military junta.
As a keen observer of Guinea’s socio-political climate and a staunch defender of the principles and objectives of the United Nations, I am deeply disturbed by the persistence of such blatant disregard for human rights, democratic principles and civil liberties. in a country with such a rich history and such promising potential for the 21st century. Reprehensible actions taken by the junta include, but are not limited to:
1) Arbitrary arrests and detentions: The incarceration of opposition leaders without just cause or proper legal process not only suppresses dissenting voices, but also exacerbates an already tense political environment.
2) Excessive use of force: Reports from the field indicate an indiscriminate deployment of force by the military against civilians, including peaceful demonstrators. Such actions not only violate human rights but also fuel public unrest, perpetuating a cycle of violence and instability.
3) Restrictions on freedom of expression and the press: The silencing of the media and the constraints imposed on freedom of expression are a sign of a dangerous move away from democratic values, orchestrated by the junta.
While recognizing the diplomatic constraints to which the United Nations is subject, I firmly believe that silence in the face of injustice only emboldens the oppressors. The international community expects institutions such as the United Nations to be the voice of the voiceless and to champion the cause of human rights, peace and justice throughout the world.
I urge the United Nations, under your esteemed leadership in Guinea, to take swift and decisive action, including:
1) Opening a dialogue: Establish open lines of communication with the junta to emphasize the importance of respecting human rights, adhering to international standards and preparing for a democratic transition.
2) Support civil society: Provide moral and tangible support to civil society organizations in Guinea that are actively documenting abuses, helping affected people, and fostering platforms for constructive dialogue.
3) Apply international pressure: mobilize international partners to pressure the military junta to end human rights violations and ensure the safe release of all those illegally detained.
The people of Guinea deserve a life characterized by dignity, peace and freedom. Thanks to the concerted efforts of the international community, under the auspices of the United Nations, I am convinced that this aspiration can become a reality.
I express my gratitude to you for your attention to this urgent matter and I hope that you will become actively involved in the restoration of peace and justice in Guinea.
Please accept, Mr. Coordinator, the expression of my distinguished feelings,
Lancine SACKO
