Azuay, In the Remigio Crespo parish, in the Gualaceo canton, an exchange of experiences focused on the guinea pig production chain was held. This event, organized by the Undersecretariat of Agricultural Marketing of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), with support from private companies and the Parish Government of Remigio Crespo, brought together producers from the provinces of Loja, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Cañar, Pichincha and Azuay, with the purpose of sharing knowledge and best practices in the sector.

During the day, producers had the opportunity to learn about the export process carried out by the company “Mr. Cuy”. This knowledge was complemented with a visit to the exporter’s slaughtering and packaging plant, which allowed participants to observe first-hand the operations and quality standards required for the successful export of this product, complemented by an exposition of the necessary processes by the Phytosanitary and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad).

“Two years ago we opened a window to a stable and secure marketing space abroad. Together, public and private institutions and producers can break down borders and reach the world with our delicious guinea pig,” said Galo Tenesaca, manager of the export company Mr. Cuy.

The main objective of this exchange is to strengthen the guinea pig production chain and exports to international markets, thereby promoting the economic development of producers and improving the competitiveness of the sector abroad.

From the province of Cotopaxi, Gustavo Herrera, a guinea pig producer for 14 years, expressed his gratitude for the shared experience. “We have a significant production of guinea pigs, intended for local consumption; today we are going with a new vision of seeking new international markets with our migrants,” he said.

This event is a clear example of MAG’s commitment to strengthening the capacities of its producers and seeking new market opportunities for traditional products. The initiative also reinforces the importance of collaboration between different regions and sectors to achieve sustainable growth that benefits everyone.
