Since 2011, abuses have increased against citizens in the suburbs of Conakry, particularly against supporters of the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG) led by former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo. Shooting assassinations, arrests and other abuses are recurring before, during and after the demonstrations on the Hamdalaye-Bambeto-Cosa-Sonfonia-Kagbelen axis. Opponents are forced to go into exile or change residence.
During demonstrations, influential young people considered to be the main actors of the mobilization are often the main target of the police inside the neighborhoods. Strong raids are carried out to pick up the mobilizers on the basis of denunciations.
This is the case of Aboubacar Traoré who is an influential member of the UFDG in Bantounka1, a neighborhood known to be hot in the commune of Ratoma. This high school French teacher, well-known in the area, was arrested several times between 2009 and 2023.
Met in a district of the urban commune of Dubreka (Bondabon) where he decided to retreat after multiple persecutions, he agreed to tell his story on the microphone of our reporter.
“During the presidential election of October 11, 2015, I was one of the UFDG mobilizers in Bantounka 1 in the commune of Ratoma. With my team, we raised awareness among citizens to register in order to be able to vote. Afterwards, we went door to door to show them how to vote. The violence that broke out after the election left people dead, injured and numerous arrests, including friends. I was arrested during the demonstrations against the electoral fraud and charades of 2020. I was taken to the Eco 18 mobile squadron of Cosa where I spent five days. I assure you that we lay naked on the ground. I regained my freedom after my family paid a large sum of money,” he said.
According to Mr. Traoré, his troubles continued until September 5, 2023 when, during the demonstration marking year 2 of the CNRD in power, he was the subject of prosecution forcing him to flee or hide
