In order to prevent epidemics and pandemics in the Republic of Guinea, the American government, through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Institute of Health (NIH), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, organized, this Wednesday, July 3, 2024, a workshop to present the “7-1-7 Approach”.

This initiative aims to improve the speed of detection and response systems to public health threats.

Participants in this workshop from different sectors concerned have seven (7) days to detect a potential threat to public health, 1 day to notify a responsible public health authority, and 7 days to complete early response measures, in accordance with the International Health Regulations, in order to focus on assessing the performance of health systems in detecting and responding to epidemics.

According to the World Health Organization representative in Guinea, ” This workshop offers us a unique opportunity to discuss and plan the understanding by the national party but also all the other actors of this approach which will certainly help us to strengthen our response capacities (…). Together we can ensure that Guinea is better prepared to face health threats and protect the entire population,” said Saïdou Dia.

On behalf of his country, the United States Ambassador to Guinea, Troy Fitrell reiterated the commitment to always support Guinea in its health program.

« The 7-1-7 approach is an important step to improve rapid detection and effective response to a health threat. The United States proudly supports this initiative. Each year, we invest nearly $10 million in Guinea’s health security. This financial and technical support is another commitment to strengthening the health system and ensuring a safer and healthier future. The United States remains committed to supporting Guinea’s health system both technically and financially, the diplomat said.

In his speech for the occasion, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene declared: ” The Republic of Guinea, like many countries, has experienced in recent years the plan Bs of patients with epidemic potential. We all still have in mind what happened in the history of our country in relation to Ebola. We had international support. I think that the results are still there and other countries are still benefiting from the Guinean experience. The diseases that we are talking about with epidemic potential have a negative impact on our population in terms of deaths, loss of purchasing power, economy and the weakening of the health system, “said Oumar Diouhé Bah.

Continuing, he will say: he: ” We have achieved some achievements, but challenges still remain despite these many actions. Appropriate measures must be taken to address these challenges. The 7-1-7 approach complements measures of resilience in terms of readiness, including the self-assessment tool for the establishment of the annual report by the States parties, as well as the joint external evaluation tool by providing a simple framework to assess the functioning of the epidemic management system and early responses under normal conditions.
