Dortmund need an energetic performance in the hard-fought game against their local rivals. The game starts with two serious blows for BVB – but then everything turns out completely differently.
A wild district derby on Friday evening: defensive mistakes, penalties, a comeback – everything was possible. And in the end, Borussia Dortmund fought for a deserved 4:2 (1:2) win against VfL Bochum, turning a 0:2 deficit into a success. And thus showed a reaction to the 1:5 debacle at VfB Stuttgart on the previous match day.
Matúš Bero (16th) and Dani De Wit (21st) gave the cheeky guests an early lead against a temporarily indisposed BVB. But coach Nuri Sahin’s team recovered as the game progressed: Above all, the outstanding Serhou Guirassy (44th, 75th) brought Dortmund back to winning ways, Emre Can (62nd / penalty kick) and Felix Nmecha (81st) scored the ultimate success, even in terms of height.
At least for one day, Dortmund jumps to second place in the Bundesliga table. In contrast, the wait for the first win of the season continues at the district neighbor. Last preseason, VfL only achieved their debut success on matchday 10.
Borussia’s desire to make amends was evident at the beginning, but it led to obvious tension. Although she took over the direction early on without the ailing Marcel Sabitzer, she didn’t really make a compelling appearance. BVB only came close to taking the lead when Karim Adeyemi’s header was quickly parried by VfL goalkeeper Patrick Drewes (11′).
In contrast, the Bochum team, who have only lost two of the last six duels with their regional rivals since being promoted again, underlined the reputation of being BVB’s fearsome opponents. With a remarkable counterattack, they ruthlessly exposed the weaknesses in BVB’s defense and rewarded themselves with the lead in their first dangerous attack. After a one-two with attacker Philipp Hofmann, Bero hit the near corner with a powerful shot.
This deficit had a huge impact on the hosts. The next setback followed just five minutes later. The trigger was a risky back pass from Nico Schlotterbeck, whose processing caused problems for BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. The beneficiary was midfielder de Wit, who pushed the ball into the empty goal without any problems. When VfL attacker Myron Boadu ran freely towards Kobel, but missed the outsider’s great chance to take a 3-0 lead, there were whistles from the stands for the first time (33′).
All attempts by Borussia to initiate a quick turnaround were initially unsuccessful. Julian Brandt pushed the ball over the goal in a promising position after a nice pass from Guirassy (39′). And yet BVB gained new hope before the break. Guirassy headed a cross from Brandt from the right into the goal.
Even after the restart, BVB tried to minimize the damage. The pressure on the Bochum team, who were now only concerned about securing goals, grew continuously. A foul by former Dortmund player Felix Passlack on Guirassy in the penalty area gave Borussia the equalizer. As usual, Can converted the penalty with confidence.
In a dramatic final phase, BVB crowned its comeback. Following a pass from Adeyemi, Guirassy took the lead from close range. A long-range shot from substitute Nmecha, which slipped through the hands of VfL keeper Drewes, knocked out VfL, who had been brave for a long time.
