Mumbai: The Gujarat Titans are on the verge of a five-run defeat to the Mumbai Indians. This is their third defeat in the 15th season of Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket.

Gujarat are top with 16 points from 11 matches with eight wins. Batting first, Mumbai scored 177 for the loss of six wickets. In reply, Gujarat could score only 172 runs for the loss of five wickets. The Titans dug their own hole just after the glittering start given by the openers. Gujarat needed nine runs to win the last over bowled by Daniel Sams. Rahul Tewatia (three) was run out in the third ball.

David Miller (19 off 14 balls) was at the crease as Gujarat lost the toss and elected to bat. This is Mumbai’s second win of the 15th season out of the play – offs. At one stage, Gujarat were 106 not out. The team was expected to win easily. Wriddhiman Saha and Shubhman Gill gave Gujarat a good start. Gill, who played steadily when Saha attacked from the start, later changed gears and added to the scoring momentum. The duo put on 106 for the first wicket. Murugan Ashwin broke the deadlock as Gujarat looked set to win by 10 wickets. Gill and Saha were bowled by Murugan in the first and last balls of the same over. Gujarat fell to 111 for two. Gill scored 52 off 36 balls while Saha scored 55 off 40 balls.

Sai Sudarshan (14) took the wicket for 40 runs in the last four overs. Hardik Pandya and David Miller hit fours each in the 17th over off Jaspreet Bumra. Hardik started with a boundary in the 18th over off Riley Meredith but the run out was a setback for Gujarat. Bumrah scored four runs in the 19th over. Miller smashed a six off the fifth ball to end Bumra’s superb over. Gujarat, who had scored just two runs off the first three balls of the last over, lost to Thevathia by seven runs. Rashid Khan hit a single off the fourth ball while Miller failed to score a single off the last two balls.
