Šenol Gunes (72), who was mentioned as a candidate to lead the Korean national soccer team, has taken the reins of Trabzonspor (Turkiye). This is his fourth time being appointed as Trabzonspor coach.

Trabzonspor officially announced on their website on the 3rd (Korean time), “We welcome Coach Gunes back ‘home.’ We decided that we needed a coach with a wealth of experience, and so we appointed Coach Gunes as our new coach.”

According to local media, coach Guus Hiddink’s contract runs until June 2026.

Coach Gunes is a legend of Trabzonspor. As a player, he played as goalkeeper for Trabzonspor from 1972 to 1987, and led the team to six league championships. He is a symbolic figure of the team, as Trabzonspor’s home stadium is named ‘Senol Gunes Stadium’.

After retirement, he started his coaching career as a coach for Trabzonspor, and served as coach three times: from 1993 to 1997, from 2005 to 2009, and from 2013 to 2014. This is his fourth coaching position.

Meanwhile, coach Gunes led his home country Turkey to a 3rd place finish in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea-Japan. In the match for 3rd place, he defeated Korea, led by coach Guus Hiddink, 3-2.

Coach Gunes, who later formed a connection with Korea as the head coach of FC Seoul in the K League, was considered a candidate to succeed former coach Jurgen Klinsmann this year, but was ultimately not selected by the Korea Football Association.
