Günter before DFB games: “Curious to see what my role looks like” | free press

Christian Günter was in the German squad for the 2021 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup, but was not used. The Freiburger is a team player – he sees the performance discussion calmly.

Freiburg national soccer player Christian Günter sees the performance discussion about his position in the DFB selection.

“Did Argentina have world-class teams everywhere?” asked the 29-year-old full-back in a “Kicker” interview: “That’s the question. Ultimately, it’s about being on the pitch as a good team. It’s probably like that that a Freiburg player doesn’t count as world class. But you don’t have to have a world class player everywhere to be successful.”

Absolute top performer

The occupation of the defensive outer positions has been a (controversial) issue in the national team for years, including under national coach Hansi Flick. “Things like that are discussed a lot from outside,” said Günter, who, as captain, is one of the top performers at the sports club. He has played seven international matches so far, and Günter was in the squad for the 2021 European Championship and the disappointing 2022 World Cup, but was not used.

“In football there is a team, and each individual is a part of it. I’m often on the pitch at the club and I don’t say to my colleagues on the bench or in the stands: you’re not part of it. Everyone is part of it,” said Günter. “It’s important that you give it your all in training, push the others and then perform when you come in. I see the big picture.”

With a view to the upcoming international matches against Peru and Belgium in March, Flick “already announced that there might be one or the other change,” said Günter. “I’m curious as to what my role will look like. In March it will become clear where the journey will go.” (dpa)
