Guri City (Mayor Baek Gyeong-hyeon) will begin pilot operation of street trash cans, specifically beverage cup collection bins, in three locations in Guri City starting August 19.

This measure was designed to encourage waste separation and recycling by making it easier for citizens to dispose of disposable beverage cups.

Since the implementation of the ‘Waste Fee Volume-Based System’ in 1995, Guri City has seen many cases of businesses and households throwing away their waste in public trash cans, and has removed public trash cans to prevent illegal dumping. The installation of street trash cans has recently been a subject of much debate in other local governments. However, according to the Ministry of Environment’s ‘Waste Fee Volume-Based System Implementation Guidelines (Ministry of Environment)’, trash cans can be installed in areas where necessary, taking into account the floating population and convenience of local residents in order to maintain urban cleanliness.

Recently, as the heat has gotten worse, the use of beverages has increased, but since bringing drinks on board buses is prohibited, it has become difficult to dispose of beverage cans and disposable cups. Accordingly, the city plans to operate a pilot program of beverage cup collection boxes at three locations around connected bus stops in conjunction with the opening of Subway Line 8 (Byeollae Line) so that citizens can easily dispose of cans and disposable cups and separate recyclables.

The installation locations are Jangja Lake Park, which is connected to Subway Line 8 (Byeollae Line), the entrance to Guri Station, and the area around the Geonyeong Seongwon Apartment bus stop, which are three locations with a lot of bus users. The trial operation period for the collection boxes is six months. The city plans to review whether to expand the operation by analyzing the positive and negative functions of the collection box operation.

In addition, the city designed the collection box in the shape of a beverage cup to minimize damage to the city’s appearance. It was designed so that anyone can intuitively tell that it is a beverage cup collection box, and easily dispose of disposable plastic and paper beverage cups, bottles, cans, and other beverage containers.

Mayor Baek Gyeong-hyeon of Guri City said, “This installation and operation of beverage cup collection boxes is a pilot project, so active cooperation from citizens is most important for clean operation.” He added, “In the past, trash cans installed in public places had the side effect of becoming sites for illegal dumping, but as civic awareness has matured, I expect that beverage cup collection boxes will be operated as originally intended.”
