Guro-gu is promoting the ‘G Bro Project’, a mock training exercise to respond to missing seniors with dementia. Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Mun-il) is starting the ‘G Bro Project’, a mock training for responding to missing seniors with dementia in dementia-safe villages such as Guro 2-dong, Gocheok 2-dong, Oryu 2-dong, and Sugung-dong.

The ‘G Bro Project’ is aimed at preventing the disappearance of elderly people with dementia, which is increasing every year with the entry into a super-aging society, and establishing a community response system to ensure that they can quickly and safely return to their homes when they go missing. Mock training is being carried out for the first time in Guro-gu, one of the autonomous districts in Seoul.

According to the district, Guro-gu will enter a super-aging society in 2024, and the estimated number of dementia patients aged 65 or older reaches 7,141.

In particular, among the 322 disappearance reports in Guro-gu in 2023, 138 were dementia patients, accounting for 42.8% of all disappearance reports, so it is necessary to prepare for the disappearance of elderly people with dementia.

Accordingly, starting this month, the district will conduct mock training assuming the disappearance of an elderly person with dementia, divided into market-type and experiential-type.

The market-type mock training educates the market merchants’ association and local residents about the characteristics of dementia patients and response actions, and then assumes a situation where a disappearance has occurred and covers the entire process from finding a missing elderly person to reporting them to the police station and handing them over to their family. The experiential mock training involves educating schools and institutions about dementia and dementia patients, then using the treasure hunt method to find dementia wandering tags and write reports.

In addition to the Guro-gu Dementia Relief Center, the Guro Police Station also participates in the training to conduct a promotional campaign for pre-fingerprint registration of dementia patients and to provide police personnel necessary for mock training.

The district plans to train about 400 people, including the market merchants’ association and students who participated in the mock training, and the heads of dementia-safe villages in four buildings, as guardians to prevent the disappearance of seniors with dementia.

Disappearance prevention guards learn about the behavior and characteristics of seniors with dementia, signs for dementia seniors such as wandering identification tags, and how to respond in case of disappearance, and are responsible for providing safe care for seniors with dementia in the region.

Guro-gu Mayor Mun Il-il said, “The simulation training for disappearance of elderly people with dementia is effective in that it can build a community safety net and increase social interest and awareness of dementia,” adding, “It will help dementia patients and their families live comfortably and safely in the community.” “We will look more closely to ensure that we can do so,” he said.

In addition, Guro-gu plans to conduct a market-type mock training at Gocheok Neighborhood Market in Gocheok 2-dong at 2 p.m. on May 8, and an experiential mock training at Deokil Electronics Technical High School at 2 p.m. on June 13.
