NU Leader Calls for Unity ahead of Congress

KH Yahya Cholil Staquf, or Gus Yahya as he’s widely known, has issued a call to all Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) administrators to collaborate in preparing for the 35th NU Congress. The goal? To ensure the congress is conducted legally, with dignity, and strictly adhering to the organization’s Articles of Association and Bylaws (AD/ART). This plea for unity comes at a sensitive time for the influential Indonesian Islamic organization.
Addressing Recent Disputes
Gus Yahya conveyed this invitation while reading Statement Letter Number: 4937/PB.23/A.II.07.08/99/12/2025 concerning Response to Tabayun Rais Aam: Clearing Up Problems, looking to the Future at the PBNU Building Lobby, Jalan Kramat Raya 164, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday. “Let us together,in the spirit of deliberation,prepare the Congress legitimate and in accordance with the AD/ART as an honorable and constitutional solution to resolve all problems and take NU forward to a better future,” he stated,reading directly from the letter.
He stressed that recent internal dynamics shouldn’t escalate into prolonged divisions that coudl harm NU’s standing as a unified organization. gus Yahya believes the organization’s energy is best spent on serving the community, rather then being consumed by internal conflict.He also urged all NU managers to continue thier work without being swayed by the current tensions.
Rejecting recent Decisions
“Because of this very reason, I invite all parties, including myself, to forgive each other and open a new page with a spirit of brotherhood (brotherhood),” Gus Yahya said, emphasizing the need for reconciliation. He directly addressed a letter from KH Miftachul Akhyar, the Rais Aam PBNU, stating that its contents must be understood in their entirety, not in isolation.
“If we are willing to see and understand the entire context completely and honestly, it will be very clear that the decision of the Syuriyah Daily Meeting at the Aston Hotel on 20 November 2025 and all its derivative decisions, up to the claim of the appointment of the Acting General Chair, are actions that have no basis,” he explained. Gus Yahya further asserted that these decisions not only lacked a strong foundation but also conflicted with NU’s AD/ART, rendering them null and void.
“Thus, as a congressman responsible for safeguarding the Jamiyah constitution, I reject this decision and all subsequent products, not for personal interests,” he stressed.He maintained that his position is solely to protect the dignity, constitution, and organizational structure established by NU’s founders, ensuring the organization remains grounded in constitutional principles and the values of brotherhood.
