The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro called for a “transparent scrutiny” in the face of “serious doubts” What about the presidential elections in Venezuela, which resulted in Nicolás Maduro being the winner, amid allegations of fraud by the opposition?

“I invite the Venezuelan government to allow the elections to end in peace, allowing for transparent scrutiny with vote countingminutes and with oversight from all the political forces in his country and professional international oversight,” the president wrote through his X account.

He National Electoral Council (CNE) from Venezuela granted Maduro victory in the election for a third six-year term from 2025 to 2031.

After this, thousands of opponents took to the streets of Venezuela to claim the victory of their candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, said protests that left at least 12 dead and hundreds of detainees.

According to local media, Petro discussed the situation in Venezuela behind closed doors at a Council of Ministers. That day, the Colombian foreign minister, Gilberto Murillo urged Venezuelan authorities to reveal the minutes of the elections which declared Nicolás Maduro the winner, amid allegations of fraud by the opposition.

The opposition’s complaints about alleged fraud are joined by requests from several countries such as United States and Brazil to ensure a transparent vote count.

The president also asked the United States government to stop the economic sanctions against Venezuela, as he considers them a “an inhuman measure that only brings more hunger and more violence”.
