Gustavo Pedro won with 50.48 percent of the vote. His rival, real estate tycoon Rodolfo Hernandez, lost by 47.26 percent of the vote. Gustavo Pedro, the newly elected president, joined the country’s former cultist group. For this he was imprisoned and then granted a general pardon.
