The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, was nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize by Norwegian environmentalist deputy Rasmus Hansson, who considers the president “an inspiration for the world.”

“I thank Rasmus Hansson for nominating me for the Nobel Peace Prize. We will continue with everything we have for peace in Colombia,” Petro published on his X account (formerly Twitter).

As explained by Hansson, one of the three Greens deputies in the Norwegian Parliament, he decided to nominate Petro because he considered that the peace work carried out by the Colombian president is an “inspiration” for the world.

“Petro promotes a creative, modern and comprehensive peace policy. He shows in practice that dialogue with armed actors can be an effective means to resolve conflicts and reduce violence,” said Hansson.

Petro, the deputy added, is committed to “inclusive” negotiations, in which women, young people, indigenous people and marginal groups participate.

Among the nominees for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize are also the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, and the human rights organizations B’Tselem (Israeli) and al-Haq (Palestinian), among others.

According to Nobel rules, the identity of candidates can only be known if their nominators make it public.

This is not the first time that a Colombian leader has been nominated for the award. In 2016, former president Juan Manuel Santos was nominated, who received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the conflict in his country.
