UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believes that the assassination in Iran of the head of the Palestinian Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, as well as the Israeli strikes on Beirut, represent a dangerous escalation of the situation in the Middle East.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, this was announced at a briefing by the official representative of the head of the world organization, Stephane Dujarric.

“The Secretary-General believes that the attacks we have seen in southern Beirut and in Tehran represent a dangerous escalation at a time when all efforts should be directed towards establishing a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all Israeli hostages, a significant increase in humanitarian aid for the Palestinians in Gaza, and a return to calm in Lebanon,” Dujarric said.

Guterres, his representative noted, has consistently called on the parties to exercise maximum restraint. “It is becoming increasingly clear that restraint alone is no longer enough at this extremely difficult time. The Secretary-General calls on everyone to work tirelessly to de-escalate the region in order to achieve long-term peace and stability,” the representative of the UN Secretary-General added. “The international community must work together to immediately prevent any actions that would push the entire Middle East over the edge [крупного конфликта] with devastating consequences for the civilian population. The way to achieve this is through advancing a set of diplomatic actions for regional de-escalation.”
