United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged both sides of the conflict in Sudan to stop hostilities during the month of Ramadan, warning of dangerous developments that could lead to the fragmentation of the country.
Guterres warned that “the conflict that has been ongoing for nearly a year threatens the country’s unity and may lead to regional instability of tragic proportions.”
The Secretary-General’s appeal came before an expected vote in the UN Security Council on a British-drafted resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities before the month of Ramadan.
During a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Sudan, Guterres referred to “renewed military attacks and growing fears of the expansion of hostilities in the east of the country, calls to arm civilians in various states, and the participation of armed groups in the fighting in West Darfur and South Kordofan.”
The Secretary-General of the United Nations said, “All these dangerous developments add fuel to the fire towards a more dangerous division of the country, deepening sectarian tensions locally, and more ethnic violence.
