Ledyard-St. Bernard Dominates Desmond Cup Gymnastics Competition

Ledyard-St. Bernard High School showcased its championship pedigree Tuesday, securing first place at the Desmond Cup gymnastics meet held at Stonington High School. The team, fresh off a CIAC Class M state championship and a State Open runner-up finish last year, posted an impressive all-around score of 143.1, leaving competitors in their wake.
Championship Form Continues for Ledyard-St. Bernard
The victory underscores Ledyard-St. Bernard’s continued dominance in Connecticut high school gymnastics. Leading the charge was Alyssa McLeod, who achieved a remarkable all-around score of 38.0. McLeod’s performance was highlighted by exceptional scores of 9.65 on both bars and beam, 9.5 on vault, and 9.2 on the floor exercise.
Westerly and Chariho Showcase Rising Talent
While Ledyard-St. Bernard claimed the top spot, other teams demonstrated promising performances. Westerly finished second overall with a team score of 123.95, propelled by Ava Pesch’s strong all-around score of 32.5. Pesch excelled on the beam, earning an 8.4, and on the floor with an 8.05.
Chariho secured a respectable showing with a team score of 113.7, largely thanks to the performance of freshman Alaia Biurrun. Biurrun, with an all-around score of 31.35, demonstrated significant potential, achieving scores of 8.3 on vault, 8.1 on beam, and 8.05 on the floor.
Stonington Bears Compete at Home
The host team, Stonington, finished third overall with a team score of 114.25. Cameron Getchis led the Bears with the top all-around score for the team, achieving a 30.2. Kyle Nachin contributed with scores of 8.1 on vault and 8.05 on the floor.
Individual Highlights and Competitive Spirit
The Desmond Cup showcased a wealth of individual talent. Isabella Falcone of Westerly recorded an 8.4 on vault and 8.0 on beam, while teammate Camryn Pellegrino scored an impressive 8.6 on the beam. The competition highlighted the dedication and skill of gymnasts across the region, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
