Gypsy Rose Blanchard, known for plotting to kill her mother, set to be released from prison after serving 7 years

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, the 32-year-old woman who gained infamy for her involvement in the murder of her mother, is set to be released from prison on Thursday after serving more than seven years behind bars. Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison in July 2016 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of her mother Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard. Her ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, is currently serving a life sentence for fatally stabbing Dee Dee.

The case, which inspired the Hulu series “The Act”, gained widespread attention due to the disturbing nature of the crime. Experts believe that Gypsy was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition in which a parent fabricates symptoms to make it appear their child is sick. Throughout her childhood, Gypsy was forced to use a wheelchair and undergo unnecessary medical procedures, as Dee Dee falsely claimed Gypsy was suffering from various serious illnesses.

In 2015, Gypsy arranged for Godejohn to travel to her mother’s house and carry out the murder. She testified at his trial, revealing that it was her idea to kill her mother, and that her relationship with Godejohn was kept secret because Dee Dee “controlled every aspect” of her life. Godejohn’s defense argued that he was motivated to kill Dee Dee in order to save Gypsy from abuse, stating that he was “blindly in love” with her.

The Missouri Department of Corrections has confirmed that Gypsy will be released early on December 28 after serving 85% of her 10-year prison sentence. Additionally, she is set to release an ebook titled “Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom” on January 9, 2024.
