The Haas racing team may have to replace a driver at the upcoming Grand Prix. Kevin Magnussen could face a penalty.

Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen has received another penalty at the Italian Grand Prix, which means he will probably be banned from racing. Nico Hülkenberg’s teammate on the Haas team caused a collision with Pierre Gasly (Alpine) in Monza on Sunday, the stewards determined, and imposed the usual sanction: a ten-second penalty and two penalty points – Magnussen now has twelve points on his account, which is the reason for the ban.

The points account for each driver is kept for the past twelve months, and the twelfth point in this period is followed by a race ban. The Haas team can appeal against the decision; if this is unsuccessful, Magnussen will have to sit out the Grand Prix in Baku (September 15).

“We were simply racing, I don’t know why penalties are being thrown around so much,” Magnussen told Sky. “I’ve spoken to the stewards so many times, I still don’t know how the rules work. It seems as if they are being interpreted arbitrarily. If an action like that is punished, then the stewards don’t want to see racing.”

If the Dane has to sit out, he will most likely be replaced by Oliver Bearman. The Briton, a regular driver in Formula 2, is a reserve driver at Haas and will move into the first row next season anyway. Bearman made his Formula 1 debut at Ferrari in March when he stepped in for the ill Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia and immediately finished in the points.
