Rionegro, Antioquia – August 11, 2025
A legal bid to overturn the arrest of former President Álvaro Uribe has been denied. The request, presented Monday morning before a civil court in Rionegro, Antioquia, by Barranquilla lawyer Fredy Alberto Lara Borja, was dismissed due to a lack of legal basis. This comes as Uribe is transitioning to house arrest.
Former President Uribe’s House Arrest Formalized
The judicial process for former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez’s move to house arrest is moving forward. The third criminal judge in Rionegro, Antioquia, has officially notified the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) that the necessary documentation, known as the imprisoning ballot, has been dispatched. This ballot directs Uribe to the prison facility in the municipality of Sonsón.
Reports indicate that Uribe has already signed the commitment act, a crucial step allowing him to serve his sentence under house arrest at his Rionegro residence. He had previously stated his intention to fulfill the 12-year sentence imposed by Judge Sandra Heredia of the 44th Criminal Court of the Circuit with Knowledge Function of Bogotá.
“This afternoon I appeared to Rionegro’s court. I had summoned for next Monday to formalize my home imprisonment, I am fulfilling since last Friday,” Uribe shared in a video posted on his social media account last Wednesday, August 6. He confirmed that all procedures for his house arrest were completed.
The court’s decision on the habeas corpus request follows earlier reports that Uribe had already completed the necessary steps for his house arrest. The imprisoning ballot further solidifies that the former president will be detained at home.
