There is still a shortage of apprentices in the trades. Robert Habeck thinks that you can make a very useful contribution to the energy transition there.

Economics Minister Robert Habeck promoted trades as a pioneer of the energy transition. Anyone who wants to make a contribution to climate protection and transformation can do an apprenticeship in a trade, said the Green politician on Friday when visiting a roofing company near Dresden. “We need craftsmen and women to install the solar systems, renovate the roofs, renovate the houses, to install heat pumps or other technologies.” Craftsmen are currently highly valued, but school leavers often decide against working with their hands.

According to the industry association, around 3.1 million people currently work in around 490,000 companies in climate-related jobs. The skilled trades in Germany are struggling with a significant shortage of apprentices. At the end of June, 37,000 apprenticeships were still open in craft businesses.

Habeck emphasized that politicians have recognized the importance of craftsmanship. With bureaucracy and a lack of skilled workers, there are currently obvious problems that also need to be addressed politically. At the same time, Habeck campaigned for more trust in the experience of the craftsmen – “if the master companies say it will hold up”. (dpa)
