Hadrontherapy is an advanced form of radiotherapy which involves the use of beams of particles, protons and carbon ions (atomic particles, called “hadrons”, which are heavier and have greater energy than electrons and are therefore more precise and effective), which affect with extreme precision the tumor cells, preserving the surrounding healthy tissues. «Hadrontherapy is not an experimental therapy, but an advanced form of radiotherapy developed to treat inoperable tumors because they are close to vital and delicate organs (such as eyes, nerves, brain) or resistant to conventional radiotherapy» explains Lisa Licitra, director scientific center of the National Center for Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO) of Pavia, the only Italian center and among the six in the world with Japan, Austria, Germany and China, capable of carrying out hadrontherapy with both protons and carbon ions.
