If we occasionally lose hair, this is usually a clear sign of stress. And stress often leads to serious secondary diseases that affect the heart.

Because: When we are stressed, our heart beats faster or irregularly, inflammation within the body is encouraged and blood vessels constrict. All of this leads to so-called cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, high blood pressure or strokes. Cardiovascular diseases are THE most common cause of death in Germany, accounting for around 33 percent of all deaths.

Researchers from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (Netherlands) have now in a Study found out that an increased risk for just such cardiovascular diseases can be read from our hair.

For the study, 6300 hair samples from people from the north of the Netherlands were evaluated. These patients were followed up for a period of five to seven years. 133 of the study participants developed a severe one during this period cardiovascular disorder.

In the samples of these subjects, increased concentrations of cortisol and cortisone could be detected in the scalp hair. These hormones indicate that the affected person has increasingly released the so-called hormone glucocorticoid in the past few months. And that, in turn, occurs when we are under stress.

Patients who had elevated cortisol/cortisone levels in their hair were twice as likely to develop heart disease later in life than those whose hair was “okay.” The risk increased three-fold in people aged 57 or younger.

But: Comb your hair quickly and then know what you’re looking for – unfortunately it’s not quite that easy. For the precise analysis of the hair, samples must be sent to the laboratory and evaluated.

Elisabeth van Rossum, lead author of the study: “We hope that the hair analysis will ultimately help the medical staff to recognize which people are at increased risk.” This test could then, among other things, help those affected to be sent for further examinations .
