Addressing the leaders of the parties, Hakizimana Godefroy expresses concerns that reflect the deep scars left by colonization (neocolonialism) and internal conflicts.

Gitega, 22/08/2024 – On April 2, 2024, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Burundi (CVR) held a meeting with the leaders of the member parties of the Permanent Forum for Dialogue of Political Parties (FDP).

M. Hakizimana Godefroy, member of the PSD-Dusabikanye partyasserting themselves, Mwenegwe and Tutsi criticized the TRC’s methods, accusing them of promoting an ethnic interpretation of Burundi’s history focused on Hutu-Tutsi conflicts.

His comments can be seen here:

Within the Burundian Ubungoma, from which Ubuntu derives, the Benegwe clan, like the Kongo, is symbolized by the Ingwe leopard totem. The individual mwenegwe is seen as an entity that judges our world, our universe uburemagi. Traditionally, Bami Ingoma y’Uburundi liked to marry Benegwe women, often requested by traditional priests (Ibishegu) during birth ceremonies or the launch of a new project. The Bami Barundi wore Ingwe’s leopard skin.

Under the grip of the German colonizers and during Bahima Burundian dictatorship from 1959 to 2005 (Ntiruhwama, Shibura – Simbananiye, Micombero, Bagaza, Buyoya)Benegwe individuals like Maconco, Nyamoya Albin it greatly harmed Ingoma Y’Uburundi.
It is unfortunate that even today, figures like Mr. Hakizimana Godefroy represent an image of marked alienation within the noble muryango of the Benegwe.

After the creation of a neocolonial state in 1966, and especially in 1972-1973, the Burundian Hima regime, under the influence of the US, the Vatican, France and Belgium, destroyed the Ubumu, the traditional social – economic system of the Barundi,. by instigating genocide against the Hutus of Burundi, which facilitates the establishment of a capitalist market economy. Although Mr. Hakizimana Godefroy declares himself to be Tutsi, he opposes this interpretation of the facts of the Hutu genocide, perhaps awaiting official recognition from The President of Burundi, HE Ndayishimiye Evariste, Major General.

In Ubumu terms, an authentic Tutsi from Ingoma Y’Uburundi acts as a just manager, redistributing the resources produced by the Hutu to meet the needs of all Barundi families. To be recognized as a Tutsi, one must first be a Hutu initiated by the Bashingantahe or the Bapfasoni and have completed their kwihutura to take on this responsibility. The question remains: is Mr Hakizimana Godefroy really a Tutsi?

It is vital for the youth of Burundi to break with the colonial alienation that some of our ancestors continue to defend, facing a destructive neocolonial policy in Burundi.
