University of Arizona Baseball Welcomes Proven Pitching Coach Sean Kenny

The University of Arizona baseball program has announced the hiring of Sean kenny as its new Assistant Coach, tasked with leading the Wildcats’ pitching staff. The move brings a wealth of experience and a track record of success to Tucson, signaling Arizona’s commitment to competing for a national championship.

“We could not be more excited about the addition of Sean Kenny to our staff,” said Head Coach Chip Hale. “Coach Kenny brings a tremendous amount of experience with consistent success throughout his career, and I have no doubt that he will be the perfect fit for our program and our culture. Coach Kenny’s reputation in this business is phenomenal,and we are looking forward to having him work with our pitching staff.”

Kenny expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect, stating, “I am extremely excited and honored to be part of the University of Arizona baseball program. We all strive to be part of a program where the realistic expectation is a National Championship; and, Arizona is that place.I am very appreciative of Coach Hale and the staff for giving me this opportunity, and I cannot wait to get started.”

A Career Built on pitching Progress

Kenny arrives in Arizona with 29 years of coaching experience, including 16 years spent at Power 5 programs. His most recent role was as the pitching coach for the University of Iowa during the 2025 campaign, where he orchestrated significant improvements in the Hawkeyes’ pitching performance. Iowa’s team ERA dropped from 5.05 to 3.81 under his guidance,while their walks per nine innings decreased from 4.41 to 3.68. Additionally, the Hawkeyes saw their strikeouts per nine innings increase from 9.1 to 10.3.

Seven Seasons Shaping the Bulldogs

Before Houston, Kenny made a significant impact during his seven seasons as the pitching coach at the University of Georgia. During his tenure,the Bulldogs reached three NCAA Tournaments,earning national seed status in two of those appearances.

Georgia’s pitching staff consistently performed at a high level under Kenny. In 2022, they recorded 563 strikeouts in just 59 games – the third highest single-season total in program history. The 2021 team held opponents to a batting average of just .226 while racking up 570 strikeouts, both the second best marks in program history. Kenny also mentored future MLB draft picks Emerson Hancock (first round,sixth overall) and Cole Wilcox (third round) during his time in Athens. The 2019 Bulldogs set a program record with 601 strikeouts and boasted the second best ERA in program history (3.24),along with the best opponent batting average in the SEC (.200).

A Proven Track Record across Multiple Programs

Kenny’s coaching resume extends beyond Georgia, Houston, and Iowa. He previously spent four seasons as the pitching coach at Michigan, helping the Wolverines reach two NCAA Tournaments and developing ten pitchers who were selected in the MLB Draft. He also served as the pitching coach at Maryland for three seasons, and held positions at Pepperdine, the University of San Diego, saint Mary’s, and Laney College.

Before embarking on his coaching career,Kenny was a successful player himself,competing for Eastern Michigan and earning All-Mid-American Conference honors. He was then selected in the 17th round of the 1993 MLB Draft by the New York Mets, playing professionally for three seasons.

Kenny holds a bachelor’s degree in literature from Eastern Michigan and a master’s degree in physical education from Saint Mary’s. His extensive experience and proven ability to develop pitching talent position him to make an immediate and lasting impact on the University of Arizona baseball program.
