The term “City of 15 Minutes”, coined by the urban scientist Carlos Moreno, refers to the need to redesign cities so that their inhabitants have all personal, work and leisure activities, accessing all the services they need. , 15 minutes on foot or by bicycle, without the need for public transport or your own vehicle.

However, this proposal is not, for now, known by 65% ​​of Spaniards, who even so, would be willing (50%) to stop using their private vehicle if they get basic services in a nearby environment.

It is one of the conclusions of the survey Powered by the FreeNow App to find out if the Spaniards know what the City of 15 minutes is and, above all, to find out if they already live in it or not.

Despite the fact that it is a term that is being heard more and more, 6 out of 10 Spaniards state that they do not know what the 15-minute City is and what it means to live in a city with these characteristics. But not only that, among those who do know this term, 23% do not agree that the implementation of the 15-minute City is a good solution to improve air quality and people’s lives in cities. , which in Spain is getting worse and worse. According to data from the ‘2022 World Air Quality Report’ conducted by IQAir, air quality in Spain has been deteriorating over the years, obtaining an index of 10.4 in 2020 that increased to 10.9 in 2022, figures that they are 2-3 times higher than those set by the UN.

Work is the main impediment

Regarding how Spaniards get around in their day to day, most state that they use their private car to carry out most of their household tasks. In fact, 61% have a private vehicle, although it should be noted that half of them state that they would consider stopping using it if they had all the services within a fifteen-minute walk or by bicycle.

Only 34% of Spaniards can get to work in fifteen minutes without using a private car, which means that work is what prevents Spaniards from being able to affirm that they live in the 15-minute City. In fact, public transport is the method most used by Spaniards when it comes to going to work (49%), followed by the private car (32%) and walking (21%).

As for the rest of essential services, there is none that all Spaniards can reach only on foot or by bike, although the one with the highest score is the supermarket, since 80% of Spaniards can access this service in 15 minutes without having to use a private car; followed by the hospital or health center (68%), leisure (58%) and school (40%).
