Candy Prices Soar as Cocoa Crisis Hits Shelves
Halloween candy prices climbed 8.1% in 2026, with chocolate packages surging 15.5% to an average of $5.67 per package, according to NBC News. The spike stems from a cocoa crisis: global prices quadrupled from January 2023 to January 2025 due to extreme weather in Ivory Coast and Ghana, key producers, before easing slightly. Chocolate makers had to work through prepurchased bean inventories.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported candy prices rose 7.7% last month, outpacing overall inflation. A bulk bag of 100 pieces of candy has gone from $9.91 in 2021 to $16.96, a 71% increase over five years, per FinanceBuzz. It has definitely been creeping up,
said Amanda Lewandowski, a Cleveland shopper noting prices rose steadily each year.
Cocoa Market Turmoil Drives Chocolate Costs
Cocoa futures reached prices not seen in over 40 years, with the cocoa futures market traditionally only used to hedge risk. If a strong El Niño hits India, Thailand and Brazil in the same crop season, no major exporter is left,
according to source data. That means no one can make up the shortfall.
Consumers Cut Back as Prices Soar
Many households are rethinking Halloween plans. I’m walking to save a little bit of money,
said Lakisha Reardon, a legal assistant. Others are trading candy for alternatives: Reddit users shared tips for giving out potatoes instead of chocolate.
Shoppers are becoming more selective. It makes us a little more selective on the amounts we do as well,
said Lewandowski, who compares prices across stores. I’ve noticed over the last few years a lot of people aren’t participating in trick or treating
due to prices, she added.
Retailers Offer Bulk Deals to Curb Costs
Shoppers can find savings by comparing prices and looking at unit prices instead of total prices and buying in bulk at warehouse stores.

What’s Next for Candy Prices?
Analysts expect prices to stay elevated. If a strong El Niño hits India, Thailand and Brazil in the same crop season, no major exporter is left. Meanwhile, raw sugar futures just staged one of their sharpest seasonal rallies in years. Expect high sugar costs to carry into 2027 candy and baked-goods prices,
according to reports.
For now, consumers face a tough choice: splurge on treats or opt for budget-friendly alternatives.
