Halo Studios Layoffs Hit Days After Halo: Campaign Evolved Global Launch

Halo Studios faced a wave of employee layoffs in late July 2026, occurring just days after the global launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved on July 28.

The timing of the workforce reductions has drawn immediate scrutiny, as they arrived almost simultaneously with the public release of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Several former employees took to LinkedIn to confirm their departures, including producer Nick Treitman and Scrum Master Paul Morris.

“after 6.5 years working on Halo and dodging just as many rounds of layoffs – it has finally caught up to me. I have nothing but love for Halo and the folks at the studio, this is just a tough reality in the gaming industry right now.”

These cuts are not isolated. Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma previously announced the most significant restructure in Xbox history, which involves 3,200 job cuts across Xbox, including positions at Halo Studios.

Development Struggles and the Blam-UE5 Hybrid

While the layoffs are tied to a corporate restructure, reporting suggests the development of Campaign Evolved was fraught with instability. According to Windowscentral, the studio attempted a complex technical feat by pairing a modified version of the Halo: Reach engine (Blam) with Unreal Engine 5 graphics and assets.

This hybrid approach reportedly led to significant friction. The studio initially relied on external developers Abstraction and Virtuos under an aggressive timeline, but the contract with those firms was ended midway through development.

Sales Disparity Across Platforms

Alinea Analytics further detailed this gap, noting that 212,000 of the Xbox/PC sales occurred on Steam. On the PS5, the remake notably sold fewer copies in July than titles like Palworld, Minecraft, and Grand Theft Auto 5.

Player Backlash Over Death Barriers

Critical reception has been mixed, with specific frustration mounting over the game’s exploration mechanics. To encourage the collection of 42 hidden skulls—three times the amount in previous versions—the game employs strict out-of-bounds restrictions.

Players have complained that the game kills the character for exploring areas that appear safe. On Reddit, users have described these as death barriers and noted that they are receiving mixed messages about whether they are actually meant to search for collectibles if exploration is punished by immediate death.

The Path Toward a Halo 2 Remake

Despite the layoffs and mixed sales, the game contains a clear signal regarding the future of the series. Players who complete the campaign on Legendary difficulty encounter a secret ending where Sergeant Johnson tells the camera, See you in the sequel, according to GameSpot.

This teaser aligns with rumors from Rebs Gaming that remakes of Halo 2 and 3 are in active development.
