(ANSA) – GAZA, JULY 17 – Hamas Civil Defense announced the death of 57 people in five separate Israeli attacks in central, southern and northern Gaza. Mohammad al-Moughaïr, a Civil Defense official, reported 48 deaths yesterday in “three massacres that occurred in less than an hour”. Three hours later, around 1:00 and 1:30 local time (an hour earlier in Italy), two further attacks were reported, resulting in the deaths of seven and two people respectively. The first three attacks occurred near a gas station in Al-Mawasi west of Khan Younes, against a school run by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat refugee camp and near the Beit Lahia roundabout. The Israeli army said in a statement that it targeted “terrorists using an UNRWA school in the Nusseirat region” and “a leading company” of Islamic Jihad “west of Khan Younis.” The army said it had taken “numerous measures” to reduce the risk of hitting civilians in the attack on the school and once again accused Hamas of hiding behind civilians and using the population as a weapon, which Hamas regularly denies.
