“Possibility of some deaths… “It takes a week to confirm whether he is alive or dead.”
Israel: Hamas has not yet provided the list of released hostages
Hamas announced that it would release 34 hostages held in the Gaza Strip in the first phase of a ceasefire with Israel.
According to AFP on the 5th (local time), a Hamas official said, “As part of the first stage of prisoner exchange negotiations, we agreed to release 34 prisoners from the list presented by Israel.”
The official, who requested anonymity, said those initially released would include women, children, the elderly and the sick.
He explained that some may have died and that time would be needed to determine the condition of the hostages.
A Hamas official said, “We agreed to release 34 prisoners regardless of whether they are alive or dead,” and added, “But we need a week to communicate with the prisoners and figure out who is alive and who is not.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office countered that Hamas had not yet provided a list of hostages to be released under the agreement.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz met with the hostages’ families the day before and emphasized, “Efforts to release them are underway, and in particular, the Israeli delegation that left for Qatar on the 3rd for negotiations is at the center of it.”
Hostage release and ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas have been stalled for over a year, but discussions have accelerated following former US President Donald Trump’s re-election success.
However, in discussions held in Qatar over the weekend, both sides reportedly disputed the details of the new deal.
The first and last time both sides agreed to a ceasefire was in November 2023. At that time, 80 Israeli hostages and 240 Palestinian prisoners were released.
During the attack on October 7, 2023, when the war in Gaza began, Hamas took 251 hostages. It is believed that 96 people remain in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military believes that 34 people were killed.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s health ministry said 105 people were killed in Israeli attacks over the weekend. The Israeli military announced that it had killed dozens of Hamas militants.
