New Delhi: Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya was killed in Iran’s capital Tehran. Ismail Haniyya was killed just a few hours after the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president. Haniya was present at the swearing-in ceremony. India’s Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari also attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday. In the picture that has emerged of the swearing-in ceremony, Nitin Gadkari and Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya were present on the same stage.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday vowed to avenge the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh from Israel. Khamenei said Israel has prepared a harsh punishment for itself after Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an early morning airstrike in the Iranian capital Tehran. “It is our duty to avenge him. Haniya was a dear guest on our land,” he said in a statement on his official website.

Hamas blamed Israel’s air strike for Haniya’s death. Iran’s paramilitary force Revolutionary Guard said it was investigating Haniya’s murder. It did not say how the murder took place.

Haniya’s murder comes at a time when US President Joe Biden’s administration is trying to get Hamas and Israel to agree on a temporary ceasefire and hostage release deal. Before her murder in Iran, Haniya was seen smiling and clapping at the swearing-in ceremony of new President Masoud Pezeshkian.
