The funeral of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian armed group Hamas, was held in Doha, Qatar on the 2nd (local time). The funeral was attended by figures from various Palestinian political groups as well as major countries.

According to a combined report from foreign news agencies including AFP, the New York Times (NYT), and Al Jazeera on the 2nd, a funeral prayer was held in memory of Haniyeh at the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque, the largest Islamic mosque in Doha, Qatar.

Thousands of people gathered at the funeral that day to catch a last glimpse of Haniye.

Khalid Mashal, who is considered the new leader of Hamas, also appeared. Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz Tutkiye, and other Hamas officials also attended.

Marshall told mourners that Haniyeh’s death “will only make us more determined to fight for freedom for Palestine,” adding that “we cannot give up those principles and we will not recognize Israel.”

He continued, “Haniye’s death has clearly caused great damage to the organization’s activities, but our course will not change.”

“Our enemies have not learned their lesson,” Marshall said. “They have been killing our leaders for 100 years. But when a leader dies, another one emerges.”

After the funeral, Haniyeh’s coffin was taken to a cemetery in Lusail, north of Doha, for burial.

Haniyeh was assassinated at her residence in northern Tehran early the next day after attending the inauguration ceremony of President Masoud Pezekian at the Iranian parliament building in Tehran on the 30th of last month.

US President Joe Biden said Haniyeh’s assassination did not help international efforts to stop the war in Gaza and achieve a ceasefire.

When asked by reporters on the 1st whether the assassination of Haniyeh made it difficult to reach a ceasefire, President Biden dismissed it, saying, “(Such actions) are not helpful.”
