Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwarsaid Monday that the Palestinian Islamist movement is prepared “for a long war of attrition” against Israel in Gaza, with the help of its regional allies, backed by Iran.

Sinwar replaced Ismail Haniyeh as Hamas leader last month, after he was assassinated.

“We have prepared for a long war of attrition,” he said in a letter to Yemen’s Houthi rebels, a group allied to and supported by Iran.

He also said that groups supported by Iran, both in Gaza and in Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen, “will break Israel’s will.”

Fighting continued in the Gaza Strip on Monday, with doctors and rescue workers announcing the deaths of more than 20 people during the day.

Earlier on Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned the United States that prospects for avoiding an escalation on the northern border with the Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah are running out.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has exchanged cross-border fire almost daily with Israeli forces since the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7 and began the war in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas’s attack that day killed 1,205 people, most of them civilians killed on October 7, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Of the 251 people kidnapped during the Islamist incursion, 97 remain captive in the Palestinian enclave, of whom 33 were declared dead by the Israeli army.

At least 41,226 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes and fighting that have devastated the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-ruled Gaza health ministry.
