Panic in Hamburg. The city’s airport was closed Saturday evening after a suspected armed man drove onto the tarmac with at least one hostage, police said. All flights to and from the city have been suspended, the airport announced on X (formerly Twitter).

The man is said to have entered the airport tarmac shortly after 8 p.m. after forcing a security barrier by car, according to Image. He then barricaded himself inside the vehicle – an Audi – parked under an airliner, adds the German daily. Hamburg police reported a “hostage situation” on X. “There are at least two people in the vehicle, including a child,” she said, although several media had so far mentioned the presence of two children.

Possible child abduction

The man was allegedly armed and fired several times from his vehicle. He also started fires by throwing “sorts of Molotov cocktails”, according to a federal police spokesperson quoted by Bild.

His wife had alerted the police earlier in the evening to warn them of a possible child abduction, the police said, according to Le Soir. Law enforcement and firefighters are on site.
