Hamburg – A routine subway ride turned chaotic Monday evening when an unoccupied train crashed into a buffer stop at Billstedt station, derailing three cars and triggering a large emergency response.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at Billstedt station, where a Hochbahn train collided with a buffer stop. The force derailed three cars of the U2 line. Authorities halted service between Billstedt and Mümmelmannsberg, providing bus/taxi replacements.

Possible Speeding Involved

Hochbahn officials suspect excessive speed contributed to the accident. The train operator experienced shock and was hospitalized. No other injuries were reported as the train was empty.

The derailment also damaged an approaching train carrying 172 passengers. Its unclear if a direct collision occurred, or if debris caused the damage. Passengers were safely evacuated.

Emergency personnel evacuated passengers via emergency stairs and transported them by bus.Hochbahn anticipates service disruptions between Billstedt and Mümmelmannsberg will continue until the end of service Monday night. An inquiry is underway.
