A poll result came out on the 12th showing that in a survey on the preference for the next leader of the People Power Party, candidate Han Dong-hoon (45%) is 15 percentage points ahead of the combined approval ratings of the other candidates, Na Kyung-won (15%), Won Hee-ryong (12%), and Yoon Sang-hyun (3%). Following the controversy over candidate Han’s “ignoring Ms. Kim Gun-hee’s Telegram messages,” the combined approval ratings of candidate Han and the other three candidates have widened from 38% to 34% two weeks ago to 45% to 30%.

The next leader of the People Power Party is elected by reflecting 80% of the party member electoral college votes and 20% of the general public opinion poll. According to a survey conducted by Korea Gallup based on this standard targeting 566 People Power Party supporters and independents (nationally 18 years of age or older from the 9th to the 11th, with a sampling error of ±4.1% points), 45% supported one candidate as the party leader. Candidate Na Kyung-won received 15%, Candidate Won Hee-ryong received 12%, and Candidate Yoon Sang-hyun received 3%.

In a similar survey conducted by Gallup Korea two weeks ago, candidate Han’s approval rating was 38%, which was 4 percentage points lower than the combined approval ratings of Na (15%), Won (15%), and Yoon (4%) (34%). Gallup Korea explained, “After the controversy intensified, the choice of candidate Han among the nonpartisan group increased from 13% to 26%.”

In the overall survey, candidate Han received 36%, candidate Na 17%, candidate Won 10%, and candidate Yoon 7%. Among the People Power Party supporters (347 people, sampling error ±5.3% points), a majority of 57% chose candidate Han as the party leader. This was followed by candidate Na 18%, candidate Won 15%, and candidate Yoon 3%.

Among the electors (approximately 840,000 people) in this convention, one candidate is ahead of the others in the Yeongnam region, which has the largest number at 40.3%. Candidate Han recorded 44% support in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, and 38% in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam.

People Power Party member Shin Kyung-mi (50), who visited the Daegu-Gyeongbuk joint speech that day, said, “On the surface, they say they are ‘one team’ but aren’t they ‘team-killing’ candidate Won?” and “If he had replied to Ms. Kim’s text, it would have been a ‘reply controversy.’” On the other hand, party member Kim (58) said, “There are times when people have to, so candidate Won should have replied to Ms. Kim’s text,” and “How can we vote for a candidate who is opposing President Yoon Seok-yeol?”

This survey was conducted by telephone interview with a randomly selected virtual wireless phone number of 1,000 people aged 18 or older nationwide. The response rate was 11.2%, and the sampling error was ±3.1% points at a 95% confidence level.
