The ruling and opposition parties agreed on the 30th to include the special prosecution law for Chae Sang-byeong, the financial investment income tax, and the 250,000 won support law for all citizens as agenda items for the meeting between People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon and Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung to be held on the 1st of next month. The issue of the medical gap, where there is a difference of opinion between Han and President Yoon Seok-yeol, was excluded from the official agenda due to opposition from the ruling party.

People Power Party leader Park Jung-ha’s chief of staff and Democratic Party leader Lee Hae-sik’s chief of staff held a briefing after the working-level negotiations that day and announced, “We have decided to open up a total of six agenda items, three of which were previously proposed by each party, for sufficient discussion at the meeting on the 1st of next month.” The People Power Party previously proposed the abolition of the gold investment tax, restoration of the people’s livelihood, political reform, and a declaration to cease political strife, while the Democratic Party proposed the medical gap issue, the special prosecutor’s law for President Chae Sang-byeong, and the livelihood restoration support fund as agenda items. As the Democratic Party has put pressure on the six opposition parties to jointly propose a “third-party recommended special prosecutor’s law” early next week, it is expected that Representative Han will state his position on the matter during his meeting with Representative Lee.

The meeting will be held at the National Assembly building at 2:00 PM on the 1st. The ruling and opposition party leaders will first make public statements for 7 minutes each through a ‘live broadcast’. Then, the meeting will be held privately, with the policy chairmen and chief spokespersons of both parties in attendance, for a total of 90 minutes, ‘3 on 3’.

The postponement and implementation of the gold investment tax will also be on the agenda for the meeting. Secretary Park said, “The agenda for restoring people’s livelihoods includes various tax reforms such as the gold investment tax, household debt issues, and Chuseok price measures.” Representative Han, who is currently in favor of abolishing the gold investment tax, has proposed, “Let’s first agree on a postponement.” Representative Lee is insisting on postponing the gold investment tax and implementing it after supplementing it. Secretary Lee said, “Representative Lee is also considering postponing the gold investment tax, so we will discuss with Representative Han whether there is any common ground.” An official from Representative Lee’s side explained, “There are different positions on the gold investment tax within the Democratic Party, and a public debate is scheduled for the end of next month,” and “Representative Lee is not finalizing whether to postpone it at the meeting on the 1st, but rather intends to discuss the postponement proposal without closing it.” The agenda for the meeting will also include giving up the privileges of National Assembly members, the low birth rate problem, and issues related to future growth engines.

The issue of the medical gap was proposed by the Democratic Party, but was omitted from the official agenda due to opposition from the People Power Party. However, Chief Secretary Lee said, “Since the leaders of both parties will have an open dialogue, I think the issue of the medical crisis will be sufficiently addressed.” During the announcement, when Chief Secretary Lee said, “Isn’t there a slight difference in position between the Office of the President and the ruling party regarding the medical crisis?” Chief Secretary Park corrected him, saying, “It’s not a difference in position, it’s coordination.”
