Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party, repeatedly urged the participation of the medical community on the 16th, saying, “We will not place conditions on the launch of the ruling and opposition party consultative body.”

After visiting the Jongno Fire Station in Seoul that afternoon, a representative met with reporters and said, “If we continue like this, no one will win and everyone will lose.”

A representative said, “I’ve been meeting with key figures in the medical community during the holiday season, and most of them share the same thoughts. They are concerned about the health and lives of the people, and that a good system needs to be created,” adding, “I’m trying to persuade them (to join the council), and they’re very sympathetic.”

He continued, “There are differences of opinion within the (medical community), and there is a sense of distrust that has built up between the government and medical professionals during the (healthcare reform) process,” and emphasized, “This consultative body is the most realistic and practical way to solve the problem at present.”

He appealed, “This is a structure in which (the medical community) can fully speak in the council. This is the starting point,” and “Are there any other solutions? There aren’t.”

When asked whether he would suggest the medical community’s demands to the Office of the President, he simply replied, “As a member of the effort to launch a consultative body, I will do what I have to do.”

However, regarding the call for the dismissal of Jang Sang-yoon, Senior Secretary to the President for Social Affairs, and the Minister and Vice Minister of Health and Welfare, he dismissed it, saying, “As the party leader, didn’t you publicly point out (the government’s) words and actions that could be misunderstood?” and “Rather than debating who did well and who did badly, or who is right, we should focus on how to resolve the issue.”

He added, “Listing specific measures as conditions for launching the consultative body will only hinder the speedy launch of the consultative body.”

Regarding the Korean Intern Resident Association, which is at the core of the conflict over the legislative process, being negative about participating in the consultative body, he said, “If we assume that a certain group will participate from the beginning, then we won’t be able to get off to a good start.” He added, “That’s why I’m meeting with medical groups individually, one-on-one, to persuade them.”
