Regarding the ongoing controversy over live broadcasting of the ruling and opposition party leaders’ meeting, which has been postponed due to the positive COVID-19 test results of Democratic Party of Korea leader Lee Jae-myung, People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon stated on the 26th, “I think it is more desirable to make it public, but I am not insisting on that as a prerequisite for the meeting.” It is interpreted that the Democratic Party, which has a negative view of live broadcasting, is trying to block the possibility of the meeting itself being canceled due to this.

Representative Han said at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, “My opinion that it would be good to disclose the entire meeting has not changed,” but emphasized, “The People Power Party will not insist on the meeting as a precondition,” and “The important thing is to hold the meeting as soon as possible.”

A representative said, “Although it was temporarily postponed due to Representative Lee’s positive COVID-19 diagnosis, many citizens are looking forward to the ruling and opposition party talks,” adding, “I hope Representative Lee recovers quickly and hope the meeting can be held soon.”

Representative Han later met with reporters and said, “A politician is someone who lets as many citizens as possible see the politician’s perspective,” adding, “There is probably more overlap between Representative Lee and my perspective than you might think.”

He continued, “I think that seeing things like ‘This isn’t as different as I thought’ and ‘This part is much different than I thought’ will be an opportunity to see politics in a new light,” but emphasized, “However, if that’s uncomfortable, that doesn’t mean we can’t meet because of it. I think it’s more important to have the ruling and opposition party leaders’ meeting after 11 years.”

At the same meeting, Supreme Council Member Jang Dong-hyeok also emphasized the live broadcast of the meeting, saying, “The people should be able to see and evaluate directly who is talking about the people’s livelihood and worrying about the people’s lives at the representative meeting.” He also supported Representative Han, saying, “There is no reason to avoid live broadcasting. However, there is also the possibility that this can be adjusted during the negotiation process.”

Commissioner Jang also said on SBS Radio, “Basically, we are in favor of a live broadcast, but I think there will be some areas that need to be coordinated during the negotiation process,” adding, “I don’t think it is desirable for the discussion itself to fall through because of the format.”
