As People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon is in the process of selecting the party leadership, the replacement of Jeong Cheom-sik, the policy committee chairman and a key figure in the pro-Yoon faction, has emerged as a “hot potato.” The pro-Han Dong-hoon faction maintains that “a leadership with a pro-Yoon color does not fit the public’s eye level.” On the other hand, the pro-Yoon faction is protesting, saying that “there will be backlash if we force a replacement.” As supporters of Han posted hundreds of comments on Chairman Chung’s social network service (SNS) saying, “He should voluntarily resign,” the pro-Yoon faction is protesting, saying, “What is the difference between ‘Han-daughter’ (Han Dong-hoon’s daughter), who is Han’s fandom, and ‘dog-daughter’ (strong supporters of former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung)?”, the conflict is intensifying.

The reason why the pro-Yoon and pro-Yoon factions are in conflict is because the majority of the ‘Han Dong-hoon leadership’ will be determined by the future of Chairman Chung. The party’s highest decision-making body, the Supreme Council, consists of a total of nine members. In addition to Chairman Han, pro-Yoon faction members Jang Dong-hyeok and Jin Jong-oh, and the soon-to-be appointed Supreme Council members, a pro-Yoon figure must be appointed as the new chairman to secure a majority. Four people, including floor leader Choo Kyung-ho and Supreme Council members Kim Min-jeon, Kim Jae-won, and In Yo-han, are classified as pro-Yoon.

On the 28th, an official from Representative Han’s side said in a phone call, “If the pro-Yoon faction keeps Chairman Chung as he is, isn’t that an attempt to control Representative Han and hold him back at every vote?” Another pro-Yoon faction lawmaker said, “Article 25 of the party constitution and bylaws clearly states that the party leader has the right to appoint and dismiss party officials and the right to recommend them.”

The pro-Yoon faction is taking the stance that it will judge the party’s “will to reconcile” by whether or not Representative Han will retain Chairman Chung, who is considered the party’s bridge between the two leaders and President Yoon Seok-yeol. A pro-Yoon lawmaker said, “Why are you trying to forcefully change the policy committee chairman when you can just appoint your own person as the secretary general?”

In particular, the pro-Yoon camp claims, “According to Article 68 of the party constitution, the term of office of the policy committee chairperson is guaranteed to be one year, and the appointment is also subject to consultation between the party leader and the floor leader.” Speaker Chung was appointed immediately after floor leader Choo Kyung-ho took office in May. Speaker Chung is also known to have taken the position that “the term of office is guaranteed under the party constitution and bylaws.”

There are also claims from the pro-Yoon faction that “Chairman Chung should voluntarily resign to open the floodgates.” Representative Han’s supporters are visiting Chairman Chung’s Facebook and other pages to bombard him with comments saying, “Resign voluntarily.” In response, Chairman Chung has switched his Facebook to private. Some have even left messages on Floor Leader Choo’s Facebook saying, “Make Chairman Chung resign.” In response, former Youth Supreme Council member Jang Ye-chan, a member of the pro-Yoon faction, said, “Representative Han’s strong fandom, ‘Han Daughter,’ is terrorizing with malicious comments,” and “If they act like the second Dog Daughter, Representative Han should personally step forward and restrain them.”

A representative said, “Since all the positions are vacant, we are working on the personnel plan from scratch.”
It has been reported that a representative will announce the selection of the Secretary General in charge of the party’s finances as early as the 29th.
