People Power Party members overwhelmingly chose Han Dong-hoon, who has been in opposition to President Yoon Seok-yeol, as the party leader. The 51-year-old Han was elected party leader with 62.84% of the votes on the 23rd, 103 days after he resigned from his position as the party’s emergency response committee chairman, taking responsibility for the party’s crushing defeat in the 22nd general election. This is the first time in seven months that a non-parliamentarian has been elected as the ruling party leader. Han’s overwhelming victory is interpreted as a result of the fact that, unlike last year’s election, Yoon Shim (President Yoon’s intentions) were completely powerless despite the strong veto from the pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Seok-yeol) camp. Accordingly, there is speculation that the ‘Yoon-Han relationship’, which has been in conflict since the 22nd general election, may quickly shift to Han. Within the party, there was an outlook that “the ruling party’s landscape in the latter half of its term will fluctuate depending on how the two people who met as president and party leader in their third year in office will clash over current and future power.”
In this convention, which was conducted with 80% of the votes from party members and 20% from public opinion polls, Representative Han won the majority in the first round of voting with a total of 62.84%, and was elected as the party representative without a runoff election. Candidate Won Hee-ryong received 18.85%, followed by candidate Na Kyung-won with 14.58%, and candidate Yoon Sang-hyun with 3.73%. Candidate Han’s vote rate is 25.68% higher than the combined vote rate of the other three candidates (37.16%).
It was significantly higher compared to the voting rates of candidate Kim Ki-hyun (52.93%) at the March 8 convention last year, when the pro-Yoon organization chart was consolidated, and candidate Lee Jun-seok (43.81%) at the June 11 convention in 2021, when the “zero-election whirlwind” blew. The pro-Yoon camp aimed for a runoff vote by mobilizing the organization chart due to the controversy over ignoring Ms. Kim Keon-hee’s text message in the early part of the convention, and the controversy over the request for the cancellation of the indictment in the fast-track collision incident that erupted at the last minute, but Representative Han won a landslide victory in both the party member vote (62.69%) and the national opinion poll (63.46%), allowing no upset to “Ah Dae-han (party leader Han Dong-hoon will be the party leader anyway).”
In his acceptance speech for the party leadership on that day, Representative Han said, “We are being evaluated as being less responsive to the people and engaging in politics that do not meet the public’s expectations,” and added, “Let’s respond without missing the opportunity. Let’s ride the wave of public sentiment.” At a press conference, Representative Han said regarding the prosecution’s private investigation of Ms. Kim Gun-hee, “I think the prosecution should have considered the public’s expectations more when determining its investigation method.” This is another head-on attack on the issue of Ms. Kim, the core cause of the Yoon-Han conflict. On the other hand, President Yoon emphasized the unity of the party and government at the party convention on that day, saying, “We are a community with a shared destiny in the same boat, and we are one.” On the 24th, President Yoon plans to invite Representative Han and the new leadership, including the supreme council members, the candidates who lost in the party convention, and the outgoing leadership to the presidential office and have a dinner with the chief of staff and other officials of the presidential office.
