The first work published by novelist Han Kang (54) after winning the Nobel Prize in Literature is expected to be the last novel in the ‘Winter Trilogy’. It is expected that the new work will be available as early as next year.

On the 16th, an official from Munhakdongne said, “(Author Han Kang) is writing the last work of the ‘Winter Trilogy’ as his next work,” and added, “As he said he plans to finish the work in the first week of November, we expect the manuscript to come in around that time. “There is,” he said. Previously, in an interview with the Swedish media on the 13th (local time), Han Kang announced his plan, saying, “I will finish the novel I am currently writing by the first week of October or November and begin writing a speech to be read at the Nobel Prize in Literature ceremony.”

This new work to be announced by Han Kang is expected to be called the ‘Winter Trilogy’ or ‘Snow Trilogy’ along with ‘While a Snowflake Melts’, which won the Hwang Soon-won Literary Award in 2015, and ‘Farewell’, which won the Kim Yu-jeong Literary Award in 2018. When this work is released, the form of a series of novels consisting of two short stories will be completed.

The previous two short stories commonly contained images of winter coldness, silence, and white snow. ‘While a Snowflake Melts’ is a short story about a labor dispute within a magazine company. ‘Farewell’ is a story about a woman who fell asleep on a bench one winter and woke up to find that she had turned into a snowman.

Unlike the recent work, which mainly dealt with historical trauma and personal wounds, the next work is expected to be bright and short. An official from Munhakdongne said, “(In the meantime), you kept saying that you wanted to write a bright work, and you said it was a short work,” and “The editors are also very curious about what kind of work it will be.” He added, “Even after the draft is received, it is difficult to predict the specific publication time as there is still a lot of work, including proofreading, to do before the final manuscript is published.” However, if progress is made quickly, the work will likely be available early next year.

While previous Nobel Prize-winning authors received the award in their 60s or 70s, Han Kang received the award in his early 50s. More attention is being paid to the list of works to be announced after the award. Han Kang’s latest work is the full-length ‘Not Farewell’ (Munhakdongne), released in 2021.

On the 15th, Han Kang presented the 917-character prose ‘Feather’ through ‘Fluff Dictionary’, an email subscription-type MOOC magazine for which he is active as a member. This was the first piece of writing published after winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, linking memories of one’s maternal grandmother, gray hair, feathers, smiling faces, and the light of a light bulb with the image of ‘white’.
